Crafting Connections Collaboration - Inferences!



Happy summer to many of you out there! It is shocking to me that it is already June. I'm so glad that school is out! If you are still going, hang on! You can make it!

Luckily for me, I had a little surprise hanging out in my back pocket to help us get through the end of the school year successfully. Ta-da!!



Way back at the beginning of the year, I was honored to be contacted by Deb Hanson of Crafting Connections. She asked if I would want to try out one of her awesome craftivities with  my class this year and of course I {jumped up and down and} said YES! Since 3rd grade was new to me this year, it took me awhile to find the right time to pull in the S'More Inferences craftivity, but we finally made it towards the end of the year.

Not only did she send me the S'More Inferences craftivity, she also sent me her amazing Making Inferences PowerPoint to help get the kids started inferring.

This was a TOTAL life saver! My class had worked on inferring, but very little. This was a great way to get them started, let them practice and then try it on their own. Plus, they loved the passages!

Once we practiced with the PowerPoint, it was time for them to get some practice on paper.


For this part, I let most of my class read and work on their own, but I did pull a small group to help with reading the passages and underlining info they would need for their inferences. They did a great job, and even picked up on some things their almost-summer-brained teacher didn't notice!

Once they had read the passages and made their inferences, it was time to make the craftivity!


They began by transferring their inferences from their packet onto their S'Mores. Each graham cracker was a text clue or schema, the marshmallow was one inference and the chocolate square was another inference. I didn't even have to tell them why we were using the S'More to represent the inference...they told me it was because you need the text clues and schema to support the inferences!! Woohoo!!

I do have one practical tip: If you are teaching younger students with larger handwriting, I highly recommend enlarging the S'Mores pieces on the copier and printing them on larger paper. We started with 8 1/2 X 11 paper and for most of my third graders that was too small. The larger pieces worked out much better!

Once their pieces were colored and cut out, they created the poster.


For the most part, they took their time and created an awesome final product!!




This was a fantastic craftivity and I can't wait to do it again! The kids had a great opportunity to show what they had learned about making inferences.
